Fruity, peach, caramelised carrot, deep greenery
 
 
Carrot naturals have been used for a long time in perfumery and are among the classic naturals.
The oil from the seed has a wonderful orris like earthy quality as well as the typical terpenic vegetal side note. This has made it useful for violet compositions, earthy notes, and similar areas (you will sometimes see early twentieth century violet bases using carrot seed oil for this reason).
 
One under-explored part of this plant is the leaf. Extracting the leaf reveals a lot more fruitiness and is in some ways truer to the character of the plant than the seed. Linked to carotenoid breakdown into ionones and related notes, it has a syrupy, liqueur-like fruitiness.
 
Reminiscent and yet hard to place, these are the naturals I crave in perfumery because they offer truly unique directions to explore.
