Verdol at 50% in DPG
I first sniffed Verdol a number of years ago and thought: "Ooh, that's a bit like halitosis near a swimming pool."
But every few months since then, I'd return to the bottle for a sniff - at times repulsed and at others intrigued by this strange duality of animalic and dank. Eventually a different picture began to appear in my mind: forests, mulch, earthiness; still with something animalic but recontextualised into ambergris, dark waters, mosses and petrichor.
It's one of those materials that can be both weird and usable at the same time. Apocalyptone is another good example of this.
Verdol finds place in patchouli accords for sure + forest floor accords but also ambergris and oud where it pushes the ambrinol and Dihydroionone Gamma note to the top. On the more experimental side, it is great for apocalyptic and abandoned themes as well as rain and atmospheric compositions. It also has a very good habit of boosting mint notes, especially peppermint. If you know your chemistry, you'll see that it's actually related to menthol but much less trigeminal.
It also lasts an ungodly amount of time, surpassing most other pine/mint materials by a long shot. It leaves behind borneol, L-Bornyl acetate, isobornyl acetate etc in the heart as it keeps radiating its strange freshness.
